eResearch activity is hotting up around the country. At this month's KAREN member open forum (12:00pm, Friday 27 August) Nick Jones from BeSTGRID will give you an insight to the upcoming NZ eResearch Symposium and the Summer of eResearch Scholarship programme. As always, Donald Clark and other members of the REANNZ team will give a brief update on the month's major developments and then open the floor to questions, comment and discussion.

Announcing the BlueFern® HPC Grand Challenge

New Zealand researchers are invited to apply for the BlueFern High Performance Computing (HPC) Grand Challenge. BlueFern is making available one million CPU hours on up to 4096 CPU cores, to challenge New Zealand Researchers to scale up their HPC applications to tackle some of the largest scientific problems in areas such as biochemistry, climate simulation, machine intelligence, molecular dynamics, etc.

The AUT radio telescope at Warkworth is now connected to KAREN. This will allow New Zealand to demonstrate its capability in radio astronomy, and could enable New Zealand to take part in the global radio astronomy project, the Square Kilometre Array.

The KAREN Services Working Group is opening their May meeting up to all KAREN members to get your input on collaboration and shared infrastructure services over KAREN.

KAREN members from around Wellington are invited to attend the 2010 Wellington eResearch Symposium on 8 June.

KAREN Members can now sponsor businesses they are collaborating with to connect to KAREN.

Tomorrow's Network Symposium brings together active researchers to showcase their use of KAREN and other networking technologies for research and collaboration. This event will be held via Access Grid and is led by BRCSS.

Media release: Important reports on schools’ broadband network released

Two important reports have just been released on a successful trial that provided rural and urban schools with fast and unrestricted broadband to empower teaching and learning.

The National Education Network (NEN) trial provided 20 schools with fast, unrestricted broadband drastically improving their access to information and communication technology tools. The trial was led by REANNZ and funded by the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education Commission and the National Library.

The KAREN Compendium showcases fantastic examples of the use of KAREN enabled tools, techniques and services from across the community.

A whopping 730 Terabytes of data zoomed its way across KAREN in December 2008. This exponential increase smashes our previous milestone of 300 Terabytes of traffic for November. Congratulations to you all for your part in helping us reach such lofty heights only two years into KAREN's operation.

Newly KAREN connected Mangamaire School is the nerve centre for a new 'fibre-to-the-farm' network for the local community.

This week the National Library began exploring video conferencing as a way to extend the reach of its services to schools.

ITPs and wānanga offered free KAREN membership for 2008

REANNZ Ltd is accelerating the reach of KAREN by offering free network membership to institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITPs) and wānanga for the 2008 calendar year.

The National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Maatauranga o Aotearoa has just released its New Generation National Library strategy. The strategy firmly places the National Library in a leadership position in embracing a digital future and includes the development of a National Digital Library as one of three delivery channels.

ESR Senior Scientist Dr Brent Gilpin held a seminar recently describing the development of PulseNet international - a network of laboratories who generate DNA fingerprinting data on microbial pathogens and share this data electronically.

KAREN users Chris Brown and Mik Black from the University of Otago featured - along with KAREN itself - on Radio New Zealand National's Our Changing World programme this Thursday, 28 of June.

Trip Report: APAN23 Manila, January 2003

Donald Clark and Julie Watson from REANNZ and Paul Bonnington from University of Auckland attended the 23rd Asia Pacific Advanced Networks meeting in Manila.  The meeting offered a chance to:

Virtual seminar on "Ancestral networks, and the curse of the unfaithful grandparents"

This seminar is a special 'Virtual' seminar that is being simultaneously presented at University of Auckland and University of Canterbury over Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network (KAREN) using 'portable' AccessGRID technology.

HITLabNZ took part in an international music collaboration using KAREN on 17 January involving University of Canterbury, Western Australia University, Manchester University, Sheffield University, Bristol University, Lancaster University and a couple other sites in UK.  A musician was stationed at each site and together they brought a new meaning to the term "World Music" by playing as an ensemble, despite being separated by thousands of miles.

The New Zealand Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NZNEES) now have a website http://www.nznees.auckland.ac.nz  It is still very much a work in progress and probably a couple weeks behind of where we are actually at.

A High Performing Computing (HPC) Workshop is being organised by the Royal Society to share information about current HPC projects, existing facilities, grid middleware tools and networks.
