    eResearch activity is hotting up around the country. At this month's KAREN member open forum (12:00pm, Friday 27 August) Nick Jones from BeSTGRID will give you an insight to the upcoming NZ eResearch Symposium and the Summer of eResearch Scholarship programme. As always, Donald Clark and other members of the REANNZ team will give a brief update on the month's major developments and then open the floor to questions, comment and discussion.

    Announcing the BlueFern® HPC Grand Challenge

    New Zealand researchers are invited to apply for the BlueFern High Performance Computing (HPC) Grand Challenge. BlueFern is making available one million CPU hours on up to 4096 CPU cores, to challenge New Zealand Researchers to scale up their HPC applications to tackle some of the largest scientific problems in areas such as biochemistry, climate simulation, machine intelligence, molecular dynamics, etc.

  • NZ radio astronomy goes global over KAREN

    The AUT radio telescope at Warkworth is now connected to KAREN. This will allow New Zealand to demonstrate its capability in radio astronomy, and could enable New Zealand to take part in the global radio astronomy project, the Square Kilometre Array.

    Media release: Important reports on schools’ broadband network released

    Two important reports have just been released on a successful trial that provided rural and urban schools with fast and unrestricted broadband to empower teaching and learning.


    The National Education Network (NEN) trial provided 20 schools with fast, unrestricted broadband drastically improving their access to information and communication technology tools. The trial was led by REANNZ and funded by the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education Commission and the National Library.

    This week the National Library began exploring video conferencing as a way to extend the reach of its services to schools.

    School Services staff from the National Library met virtually with Wellington College teachers and CORE Education on Monday to explore video conferencing as a tool to share their understanding of books for boys and show them examples of books to help nurture boys’ reading.

    HITLabNZ took part in an international music collaboration using KAREN on 17 January involving University of Canterbury, Western Australia University, Manchester University, Sheffield University, Bristol University, Lancaster University and a couple other sites in UK.  A musician was stationed at each site and together they brought a new meaning to the term "World Music" by playing as an ensemble, despite being separated by thousands of miles.
